Why We Do This: The Real Reason We've Chosen to Be Wedding Photographers

The wedding industry. Don't even get me started. It's one of the craziest, most hectic industries, with a whole set of built-in traditions and expectations. And for some reason we've decided that's exactly the industry we want our lives to be about. I've heard from so many photographers about how choosing a career in wedding photography is absolutely nuts. Carrying 30+ pounds of equipment on you for 8 - 10 hours? No thanks. Culling and editing thousands of images a week? Heck to the no. Most people would balk at the amount of work that goes into this profession.

But for all the craziness that comes with it, I'm a firm believer that this type of photography is just about the most fulfilling out there. See, here's the thing: us wedding photographers are in on a little secret that photographers in other industries don't seem to understand. No picture of a handbag or a cocktail or a building will ever compare to capturing the connection between two people. I'm sure there are many commercial, food and architectural photographers who would fight me on this, but I stand my ground.

I dare you to watch two people snuggle up against each other beneath a roaring waterfall and not let it pull at your heartstrings. I equally dare you to not get emotional when you hear two people, who've spent the majority of their adult lives together, profess their love to each other in a secret spot special to just the two of them. As wedding photographers, we have the most incredible job out there: capturing a fleeting moment in time and bottling up a feeling into an image that can be viewed and cherished for a lifetime. Yeah, I totally realize I sound cheesy. But don't mistake that for anything but my utmost love for what I do.

I get to see people's souls through my images. I get to be invited into their lives in a way that isn't always visible from the outside. I get a sneak peek into the inner workings of some of the most passionate and adventurous love stories out there. And every day I wake up excited about the prospect of getting to hear another couple's story and to be a part of their journey.

Us wedding photographers get plenty of crap from our photography peers about choosing this specific genre of photography. And that's fine. To each his own. But for us, the rush after climbing up a mountain with our couples for their engagement session and seeing how they just melt into each other and into the moment? That's what we live for. Say what you want about the wedding industry. No doubt, it has its flaws. But for all the issues that may come with this industry, nothing can outweigh capturing the real, raw spark between two people taking a pledge to kill it in life together.

P.S. We pride ourselves on taking killer photos in some of the coolest, most adventurous places. Think we'd be the right adventure elopement or intimate, small wedding photographers for you? Give us a holler.

Sheena Shahangian is an adventure elopement and intimate, small wedding photographer based in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
